The song starts ethereal and slow, but soon builds into an anthem. If you don’t know the backstory and you aren’t paying attention to the lyrics, “Come & Go” is a dancefloor banger - thanks in large part to Marshmello, the highly sought-after electronic music producer and certified hitmaker. The fiercely creative and motivated artist, who’d already released three albums since bursting onto the scene in 2018, was freshly 21 and on the precipice of utter superstardom when he died at the end of 2019. Juice WRLD and Marshmello’s “Come & Go” was released seven months after the tragic passing of the rapper, born Jarad Higgins. It’s a strange feeling when a flat-out smash record simultaneously forces a smile on your face and tightens your throat with sadness. Megan Thee Stallion & Beyonce - “Savage Remix”.As “Un Dia” evolves into a brighter mid-tempo reggaeton tune, a meaningful message reveals: the power of self-reliance. Produced by Puerto Rican super producer Tainy, the man behind many a reggaeton hit of past and present, the heart-rending collaboration was put together by his own NEON16 collective - the team behind Tainy and Balvin’s “Agua,” of the SpongeBob Movie soundtrack, and 2019’s Oasis by Bad Bunny and J. Collectively, the all-star line-up candidly convey the universal feeling of love’s torments in this beautiful yet nostalgic slice of tropical pop. Balvin and Bad Bunny chime in, offering male perspectives as they embrace their tender sides. Dua Lipa leads with her warm, remorseful vocals, singing of romantic despair over a somber pop piano riff. “Un Día” (or “One Day”) captures four superstars hailing from different parts of the world - Colombia, the U.K., and Puerto Rico - and together, they join forces to break language barriers in one bilingual plea. While this yearnful anthem dwells in painfully romantic longing, it is anything but lonesome. Balvin, Dua Lipa, Bad Bunny, Tainy - “Un Dia” “Ice Cream” on its own was a delectable mashup of breezy hip-hop and bubblegum hooks - putting Gomez on the track with one of the biggest girl groups in the world, made it even sweeter. Blackpink have never needed anyone’s stamp of approval to find success, but having a Gaga and Gomez co-sign in the same year went a long way towards exposing the group to a larger audience (worth noting: The Album also features a track with Cardi B). The girls’ voices trade off perfectly with Gomez’s, equally coy and seductive, while holding their own with the reigning pop princess. While Blackpink have stormed the charts with their brand of in-your-face lyrics and aggressive, beat-heavy bangers, “Ice Cream” showcased a softer, more subtle side to the group, with playful double entendres riding a relaxed, head-nodding groove. In August, Blackpink recruited none other than Selena Gomez for “Ice Cream,” an infectious, summery bop that became an instant hit on the girl group’s debut LP, The Album - and a new fave for the fandom. Blackpink’s feature on Lady Gaga’s Chromatica album in March was an unexpected surprise for both BLINKS and Little Monsters alike, but “Sour Candy” was just a teaser for bigger things to come.
